Re: tiny recticulata

Iris reticulata and its relatives are mostly high-altitude and therefore very cold-hardy. I. reticulata and I. danfordiaeÂare sold as fall-planted bulbs in practically every garden center, which probably attests to their adaptability to soil type. They're happy as long as they're sunny and dry. None of the commercial forms are as tiny as the one Ken's growing though!

Thanks for the information.
I'm just getting started growing iris (hobby-level) so I know I have a huge amount to learn.
Right now I'm trying to gather all the information I can on those iris species capable of growing in clay soil in zone 5, so that I'll be ready when the seed list gets posted.

Hi Anita,

I've only grown this clone if Iris recticulata in zone 9. I'm growing it in a container with well-drained soil. The climate of Azerbaijan (AzerbaÃdjan) seems to be quite variable. The east is dominated by the Caspian Sea which moderates the climate considerably, but if this plant was collected at a high elevation it's home could be quite cold.

Alan McMurtrie in Toronto, http://reticulatas.com/, hybridizes Iris recticulata and its relatives, so many of them do well in cold climates.

Please tell me how hardy your beautiful little darling is and what sort of soil it likes.

Today a tiny Iris recticulata bloomed. It is only 1 Â inch (4 cm) tall. Catalog description: AS.09-23, originally collected in North Eastern AzerbaÃdjan.
