Re: Re. Method/A proposal

We have more-or-less been brainstorming, but how about if an actual proposal was made to SIGNA. This would mirror the concept of the NCCPG. Allow me to throw out a rough draft and anyone may comment.

  1. To establish a system of study collections. Each collection holder would choose a limited area of interests, usually a species or a small group of related species. This would not be the same as a display garden, as the goal is not to show the plants, but to study them and conserve that part of the gene pool. It of course could be a part of a display garden.
  2. Each study collection would be registered with SIGNA, a report of the contents filed each year. Depending on the capabilities and space of the gardener. SIGNA would encourage plants of that type be sent to the collection holder for evaluation or study. If possible, from time to time the collection holder would provide information they have learned to the newsletter either as notes, or articles.
  3. A goal of conserving the genetic diversity of the collection would ask that an agreement be made, whereby if the owner dies or looses interest the collection could be transferred to another holder. Hopefully there would be more than one person holding a similar collection so all would not be lost in a catastrophe in a particular garden.
  4. As in England the plants are the property of the collection holder, but when possible and as the need arises they would be expected to help provide a start of plants lost to commerce for reintroduction.

Since there are around 250 Iris species it is not inconceivable that someday there would be that many collections are triple that for the sake of redundancy. But for now if we could plant this seed, we might be able to create just a few gardens and let the idea grow.
