Re: Iris pseudacorus

I am not sure now fast I. pseudacorus increases in more northern climates; however, in an aquatic or bog situation in zone 8 it increases much faster than most and will eliminate native Louisiana and virginica types of irises.  It is a definite danger to our native irises and other native plants.  It should be outlawed.

Deaaheading is the solution. It doesn't increase any faster than most, just seeds exceedingly. If you cut the bloom stalks, it can't.     Joan Cooper

Hi Dennis,

I have trouble keeping I. pseudacorus in my garden because the borers love it so much.  However, there is a small lake near us which is completely ringed with it in the edge of the water.  Apparently, the borers can't do their dirty work while the plants are in water.

This aggressive behavior is really starting to turn me off of this species!  I might just have to toss it from my garden all together...  it's surprising to me that our native irises just can't compete with it.
