Re: Re: Iris pallida cultivars and nomenclatural question

Dave; I realized I gave only a partial answer to your question. I don?t believe there has been an official publication of variegate/pallida hybrids as Xsqualens or Xsambucina. Indeed there are a number of taxonomic problems that have never been resolved in this area. For example there is an official botanical name of Iris Xaltobarbata for tetraploid tall-bearded Irises but no botanical name for diploids. Norlan Henderson proposed several names such as xlouisianica and Xpacifica for these types of hybrids but I believe Xpacifica is invalid because it was once used for Iris douglasiana. I have the e-mail address of the worlds expert on this type of nomemclatural problems but have been a little intimidated to use it until I have gathered enough facts to ask my questions intelligently. As I understand it the current trend in botany and not provide a proper botanical name for hybrids. In otherwords let the horticulturalistr establish classification names without a botanical name for horticultural groups.
