I have almost equally dismal results with trying to germinate 
chinensis seeds.  The only success has been one lot of odaesanensis 
from SIGNA which were sown January 20 and germinated April 10.  They 
were kept in an unheated large greenhouse that has a temperature 
similar to outside, but doesn't get frost.  Winters here have 
occasional frosts, and the most common temperature is around 5 C (40F)

The seeds that germinated were sown earlier than the ones that 
haven't - January rather than February and March.  Maybe they require 
a certain length of time at a low temperature.  However, this year's 
odaesanensis seeds were sown only three weeks later than the 
successful ones from two years ago, and they haven't germinated yet. 
Could three weeks make a difference?
