I have had problems keeping them alive outside. Sometimes they survive, but never for more then 2-3 years before a winter does them in.
They do well in pots on windowsill, and as long as I divide each year, they bloom inside from about Feb to April. It is only because of this early bloom that I'm able to have them in bloom at time that bucarica is in bloom here.
They do very well as potted plants, but do crowd out the pots quickly.

Hey Chuck, do you have to do anything special to protect your tectorum?
Mine seem to get badly burned in winter.... as does my foetidissima.... but they always come back strongly when the weather warms up. They also set a lot of seed, just from the bees.
I only grow Iris tectorum alba, and it has become quite a large healthy clump in the last 5 to 10 years. Mine grows just inches away from the west side of my house.
I'm on the border of Zone 5 & 6.

PS: I grow bucharica too. Next year I'll try to remember to cross them!

I had reported last year on seed pod on tectorum polinated by bucarica.
I got three seeds from this pod. One looked good, others were tiny and
schriveled up.
It took a long time, but the one good seed finally germinated. It was
growing well in a covered fruit cup, but stopped growing as soon as lid
was off. Eventually died.
This year I pollined four tectorum flowers with bucarica polon . Four pods. Now waiting to see what seeds I get.
You wouldn't expect such a cross to take. But it did.
