I have some small evidence that this is pure nonsense. It's been my experience that under the proper circumstances, fertile diploid hybrids are not only possible, they are inevitable.

parents' chromosomes have to be sufficiently analogous to pair, or the 
embryo will be inviable, not just sterile.
