Re: foetidissima seedlings
Hi Dennis,
Theoretically, the odds of pulling up a higher percentage of variegated
seedlings improves if a variegated seedling is crossed to another variegated
seedling. Everything depends on how strong a trait it is and wether or not
any genes that help the expression of variegation come along for the ride.
Most of the variegations that have shown up here are pretty unstable
(http://www.geocities.com/shanatse/). Over a dozen species aren't shown on
the page but the most stable have been the peas and CA poppies. The least
reliable has been the horehound and broccoli. No telling which category any
of them will fall into until you've done the crosses. :-)
I have 2 fans of the variegated foetedissima that arrived last season. Just
to be on the safe side, one spent the winter as a houseplant in the sunroom
and the other was planted out. The one outside is planted so that a small
lilac seedling shades it from the noonday sun and it's in an area that gets
watered so doesn't ever dry out compeletly. The leaves died back over the
winter but it's coming back strong. Cold doesn't seem to be a problem. We
dropped to -29 for a while.
