Thanks Bob, Judy and Jim! I wasn't sure how these
would be received -- if people might think they were a
move in the direction of having less "grace" (less
species-like form).
Bob, I hadn't thought that these were different enough
yet to register. I would like there to be enough
difference from others, that there would never be any
question about identity -- I think someone called it
the 10 foot rule (you should know an iris from 10 foot
a way or it isn't unique enough). But still, I'll keep
registration in the back of my mind as I note how
these perform in the garden. And I'm already swapping
pollen back and forth between them, so maybe another
generation will bring even more significant
differences.
Judy, I'm probably most partial to the dark one. But
the white is really close behind. Actually the whites
I started with were always quite a bit smaller than
the blue/purples, so a larger white was something I
had been expecting/hoping for. This one was the only
white that didn't also get the genes for small size.
So, maybe I should appreciate it more.
Jim, these came from a group of about 3 dozen or so (I
never did count them). I'll bet a larger group would
have had even better ones in it. And I'll certainly be
trying to get that overlapping form combined with the
other color variations. As for a pink one, no luck
with that yet! Greg McCullough (of Iris City Gardens)
has been "requesting" that from me, for years now ;0)
I think Iris tectorum is probably his favorite. Maybe
by crossing in the two SIGNA collected tectorums, I'll
get that elusive pink. I'll definitely be keeping my
eye out for any tendency in that direction.
Thanks again guys. Best wishes, Tom

selections that we had in mind when we created the
Founders of SIGNA medal. They may not be hugely
different but they have enough improvement that they
certainly would be a desired form for a garden. These
type of plants have appeared in the pst but because
they were never noted or named and registered they
went unnoticed and dissappeared. Thank you for
pursuing these selections.

especially, but then I like white flowers in general.

Jim Murrain wrote: Way cool, Thomas, how many
seedlings did you have to grow to get these? The
overlapping forms are very nice. Do you think you can
work on the dark one to improve it's form? The color
is great! Now, where is the pink one? ; )
