Re: Re: milesii hybrid

Thought I should mention that I grew I. milesii here in Minnesota for several years. I think they gave up in an especially bad winter. I'd like to try again. Does anyone know of a good source. Looks like some of my I. tectorum are at least sulking except Woolong is doing well. Shouldn't we make a point of mentioning our location when commenting to this group, location or, at least zone?            Joan Cooper     Zone 4

Jim and Jim,
Thanks for all of that information on milesii and kin.

I've only seen pictures of the tender ones, but they
look very distinctive and impressive. Maybe some of
these hybrids (especially Honiana and Queen's Grace)
could be a stepping stone to introgress, by
backcrossing, desirable improvements into Iris
tectorum -- in particular, I'm picturing the extreme
branching and bud count, I saw in a picture of Iris
confusa. Iris tectorum could definitely use more
branching and budcount.

Oh and I thought you might appreciate... I've grown
'Woolong' for a number of years now -- it's a nice
tectorum. I just had to pull up the huge clump to make
room for more stuff. Of course I replanted a piece,
but I couldn't bear to compost the rest, so I just put
all of it on top of the ground (around a locust tree)
back in the wilder part of the property. The other day
I saw that it is growing just fine in spite of not
really being planted.

Do you know if any of the Lee Lenz bearded X tectorum
hybrids were distributed and/or if they still are
around anywhere?

Take care, Tom
