Mark,
I'm sure your Aristea is alright in Florida; mine has withstood, without damage, the occasional freezes we get (it rarely goes below freezing here, never much below, and never for long). In the freeze of the 2010 winter, my Clivia lost some leaves, but the Aristea was unfazed.
So far as soil: when I moved my plant to its large tub, I used standard potting mix -- one that was touted to be very well draining. The plant has been happy for over a year, so I'd say it's not very fussy about soil. Sand is supposed to be very well draining, so I think it'd be OK; maybe add some quantity of organic matter to give it structure, like leaf mold or coarsely milled sphagnum. Good luck,
David E.

David, Thank you for the information. That is twice now I have found major errors with Floridata, and I may stop using it. I have Aristea plants in two places, and I think I will try gently lifting the most smothered ones and putting them in 16â pots where they will get a lot more sun and will not have to compete with Camellias. Compounding cultural issues here is our soil. Gardening here is like gardening in a kiddie sand box. Should I plant them in pots filled with sand, or maybe plant them in a good potting mix instead? I love this plant, and want it to be happy. What is the real cold hardiness of Aristea ecklonii? There is conficting information on that. Mark A. Cook b*@bellsouth.net Dunnellon, Florida. |
