Hello Dennis,
Thanks for the interest and warm wishes. Glad to hear
that you're growing Paltec again. The longer I grow
it, the more I am impressed by it. The same goes for
tectorum. I'm starting to see why Greg McCullough (at
Iris City Gardens) likes Paltec and tectorum so much.
Iris tectorum really is a super easy iris to grow, and
Paltec seems to have gotten a lot of that quality
(ease of growth) from tectorum. I can say, that
they've put up with a lot of neglect on my part. I
have to admit that my own hybrid, 'Flying Dragon',
hasn't been quite as forgiving of neglect. Although,
right now, it's looking pretty good too. I'm looking
forward to a great bloom season [2006] for both of
these hybrids.
I'm going to try intercrossing these two, with what
little pollen I can get from them. My hope is that an
unreduced pollen finds an unreduced ovule; resulting
in the first fertile amphidiploid of this type. Right
now, this is my best chance for producing an
amphidiploid. Later on, if I can produce a tetraploid
Iris tectorum, it would seem most productive to
intercross tetraploid Tall Beardeds with tetraploid
tectorum to directly produce amphidiploids.
Once we have a few fertile amphidiploids, we can
intercross these to expand the group. Another way to
expand the group, would be to use the new amphiploids'
pollen on the existing "sterile" diploid hybrids (like
Paltec and Flying Dragon) to make use of the
occassional unreduced gametes that they'll hopefully
produce.
In addition to expanding the new "fertile family",
these amphidiploids could be used to make new
intermediate types. They could be backcrossed with
Tall Beardeds, or could be crossed with other bearded
groups, such as Standard Dwarf Beardeds or arilbreds.
I think there's a lot of potential here, waiting to be
tapped.
All we gotta do is get it started.
Tom
