From my point of view as an ordinary gardener:

My interest in spec-x is two-fold: to have something totally new and
gorgeous, like Eyelash Iris, or to have the chance to grow something
similar to species that won't grow for me.

For instance, oncos. Even then, I want Arilbreds to look exotic and as
close to an onco as possible. I won't bother with one that looks like
an ordinary bearded. However, someone in Iran who is bored with oncos
might be very pleased to have a bearded-looking arilbred, if she can't
grow beardeds.

Similarly, I see no point in my growing a Cal-Sibe, since Pacific
Coast Iris are my easiest-to-grow. I can certainly understand that
someone in Saskatchewan would be happy with a Cal-Sibe.
