Re: Bearded Irises in Florida

No increase until growing point (apical meristem) is changed from a
vegetative to a floral meristem, when apical dominance (and repression
of growth of increases) is removed. This can only happen when there is
bud set and plant has reached maturity. It also needs to have been set
into am epigenetic state from previous years cold period during
"winter" .

You could try removing main fan on a rhizome to see if increases will
grow. but without the epigentic state being set, may not do anything.

Subject: [iris-species] Bearded Irises in Florida

Â
ÂÂÂÂ With the exception of Iris albicans, what has happened to all
Bearded Irises I have tried to grow is this:Â They simply do not
increase. I have tried a number of Bearded varieties. They eventually
bloom out because they initiate no increase.

ÂÂÂÂ I wonder if there are some cultural practices that could 'trick' a
bearded Iris to increase in Zones 8 and 9 in the Gulf Coast and Florida
region? It looks like some Irises could be 'tricked' into increase
initiation. Are you all aware of anything that would work?
