RE: differences between chinese irises

Thank you Bob,

except for I. formosana I had recently and it's too young division to consider its features so well.
the other two plants are as you say: the one labeled as sichuanensis (I have tough it's wrong) is a little bit taller than japonica, without cane; the one labeled as confusa is taller more, and have short canes.

Hear you in private for other.
fil.

Fillipo; If one looks at the canes of Iris wattii they rise above the ground with a cane that supports at the top a leaf fan which in turn gives rise to a very branched flower stalk. O the other hand Iris japonica has practically no cane with only the leaf fan abd flower stalk, Iris confusa has a short cane and is somewhat intermediate. Iris formosa is intermediate in height between Iris confusa and Iris japonica. I and not familiar with sichuanensis as part of this group of crested Iris and would love to know as much information as you might be able to provide. The true Iris sichuanensis has not been in cultivation but is believed to be a pseudoregelia. Erroneuos plant have been distributed unfer this name. E-mail me privately and I can discuss some sources.

Subject: [iris-species] differences between chinese irises

Hi all,

It's a long time I have problems to understand the differences between some chinese irises.
I grow from many years Iris japonica and Iris wattii, and the last year I have had 3 new species of the same group:
I. formosana, I. sichuanensis, I. confusa.

I'm rather sure I. confusa and I. sichuanensis I got are two different species or forms because they are not similar to japonica and wattii. But I'm waiting for their first blooming to recognize some new features which can clarify the situation.

Can somebody tell me the main features of the known species of this group?
Is I. sichuanensis a valid species?
Which species of this group can produce tall bamboo-like stalk?

Thank you
fil.
