Well, I've never spayed my irises anyway... ;=)
I have been extremely vigilant in past years about
removing all dead leaves - and still had borers. I think
that the sneaky pink devils have other hiding spots besides
dead foliage for their eggs. There is also the possibility
that they could be wandering over from a neighbor's yard. I
think you'd be taking a big chance.
