Re: HELP!!! Moving irises

I think the problem about moving irises resembles ones nervousness about how
to handle your first born - child, that is(not seedling!) You are so afraid
of doing the wrong things. But the Voice of Ex[perience (forget who that
was) mentioned that instinct will take over. Anyhow, I move an iris any
time I want it somewhere else. You might upset its bloom time (like having
to pay the price of upsetting a baby's schedule) -- but both the baby and
iris are resilient and rally around the change. I have moved them before
bloom, during bloom (tho it is best to cut off the bloomstalk, but that's
sensible, because it overweights the iris so that it could pull out of the
ground, and it, the stalk, makes a nice bouquet!) and immediately after
blooming, -- or even before putting the iris bed to sleep (altho that could
give a heaving problem - what is life, but a problem!). So take heart and do
what is convenient for YOU! It;s best to be able to replant in the new
place, but if you can't, do it as soon as possible. "Don't sweat the small
stuff" -------- SAY! I just had a brilliant idea! Make some notes as you
do this and write it up as an article for an iris publication. I hope you
have some rebloomers in your garden - I know the RECORDER for the Reblooming
Iris Society would like articles! "Try it, You'll like it!"
I apologize for such a long message, but when I got up at 6 a.m. at the time
of year that is approaching Easter, and looked outside and thought I had done
a Rip VanWinkle and it was Christmas! Imagine SNOW in zone 7 the 2nd week
of APRIL!! In a way I'm glad for my 5 yr-old great-grandson who is up here
in MAryland for the weekend and all his life he has wanted to see snow!! They
live in Miami - 'nuf said. Have fun (but I really wouldn't try to dig and
move if the ground is white!) Rosalie nr Baltimore,USA ryfigge@aol.com
