Arils (oncocyclus & regelia species & their hybrids) are tough to grow in
the East and require special techniques. I am trying some of the regelias
on a sunny hillside which literally bakes in the summer heat. I think it
will work.
Arilbreds (hybrids between arils & "normal" bearded irises) are much
easier. All of the quarterbreds (25% aril parentage) should grow just fine
for you. But some of the halfbreds (50% aril parentage) are fussy and do
best when provided with extra drainage.
In 1997 I bought a 3/4-bred (75% aril parentage) without knowing what it
was, and planted it with my "normal" bearded irises. It has been slow to
increase, but this year it is finally sending up bloom stalks! This summer
I will move it to a more favorable location.
The Aril Society web page has a list of recommended cultivars, but it is
kind of old and will be updated later this spring.
