Thanks for the information Dell. It's valuable to
know. Sounds like Blue Chip Stock is a vigorous grower
and happy bloomer. A plus when so often you hear of
irises going two or three years without blooming.
As I suspected, it's bud count is a little on the low
side. In past experiences with MTBs in their
background, I have found this to be true. There is a
couple of MTB cultivars on the market with SDB in it's
parentage and they have low bud counts as well.
Years ago, I did a bunch of crosses using the 48 chr
aphylla hybrids and crossed it with SDBs. My thought
was that I would work toward plants with round and
ruffled SDB-like flowers on MTB stalks. That did not
happen. The resulting seedlings were of very poor
quality, narrow blooms, lacked branching or bud count,
and were infertile to boot. I couldn't even take it to
the next generation. After several years of this, I
gave up and tossed all the seedlings.
The past couple of years, I've been approaching the
goal from a different angle. I have been crossing the
aphylla hybrids with TBs as they are both 48 chr. So
far they have been showing good growth and hopefully
this year I will see a few of them bloom for the first
time. I have been mixing the aphyllas with Reblooming,
Space Age and broken color things. And these seedlings
should be fertile (I hope) so I can take it to the
next generation.
