It's way too late for this chick to be considering starting an e-mail about
the Dallas convention - but I thought I'd touch in to say, so far it's
fabulous and I wish every single one of you were here.
Peter and I left (was it only yesterday????) Buffalo at 7:15 on Saturday - or
rather, we WOULD have, if US Air hadn't cancelled the flight because there
weren't in the mood or something. Then, after many mishaps .... such as
sending us to a gate which sent us to ANOTHER gate, which was closed.... and
then back to "Go"... without collecting $200 - until they could persuade a
plane from Montreal to stop and pick us up. All this, only to get to
Pittsburgh, where we discovered our seats had been sold when they cancelled
the first segment of our trip.... and so on and so on. You know the story by
now.... get on the plane... get OFF the plane. So, we finally got to Texas
four hours later than we thought, and entered the Board meeting in progress.
The AIS Board, for those who are not aware, is made up of people just like
you who try their very best to consider options and write policy to make this
organization strong and valuable for it's members. I am fortunate to be a
part of this process and so I was sorry to miss so much of the first day.
As we walked in, our fearless leader was giving his report on Electronic
Initiatives - and I think you folks are going to be tickled to death. Some
programs that are approved and very close to being in place include:
A searchable database for items in the AIS library
A searchable database for the iris checklist (up to 1989)
An index of iris names
John has really managed to move the AIS from about 1920 right into the 21st
century at warp speed.
I really need to climb into bed, but I thought that information was worth
passing along instantly. Be patient.... it's all approved and it's coming as
fast as it can.
And the same old motley crew has reformed and is holding court in the hotel
tavern... and fortunately this year, there's only one.
Everyone is here.... and based on the exquisite specimens I saw in today's
iris show, bloom is going to be spectacular!
Oh... except that last night as we sat in the bar, the television was
sporting severe storm warnings... and Hooker Nichols advised us that there
was a cell heading our way with "grapefruit sized hail and 70 mph winds".
Weather tends to be on the fancy side down here.
More soon.
