Well -- Here's answering half of my own question: Another stalk of LUMALITE bit the dust yesterday. But this time, I noticed that at the point at which the stalk withered it had obviously been gnawed by something. This was near the base of a leaf, and the critter had gnawed through both the leaf and the stem. Inside the stem, there was a little chamber about 1/8" in diameter which was bone dry. The stem above this had withered. I looked for eggs with a magnifying glass, but found nothing. So, does this sound familiar to anyone? I haven't encountered it in 25 years of irising.
