Re: OT - Using Subject Tags

Evening...

I wonder when this subject tag issue is once and for all going to be dealt
with... Not the problem of using incorrect tags, but when and if the
iris-talkers are ever going to stop getting beaten over the head about not
dotting their 'i's' and crossing their '"t's" or using the "perfect" subject
tag... If you look at the tags currently on the last 4 or 5 days iris-talk
digests, some of them don't have anything close to do with what the tag
says... They just pick up whatever went out to begin with and respond to it,
as is...

Regarding Carolyn's public reprimand and Scott's message about
heavy-handedness, YES it's heavy handed! And many many people, including
myself have received these "heavy-handed" reprimands for not using the
"perfectly labeled" tags countless times... They completely discourage folks
from ever posting or wanting to post to iris-talk again. That is why you
have so many lurkers on this list. If you don't wear your asbestos shorts,
you're apt to get your feelings hurt...

I personally regarded the message to Carolyn (whether it went to the whole
list or not, even to her as an individual human being) as being rude and
thoughtless... In fact, it sounded like a threat to me, that if she ever did
that again, she'd be banned from the list.

I too agree with Carolyn in the fact that all these people, yes, JIJ himself
- with his 22 sign off lines upon every post, that are wasting ALL THAT SPACE
on the lines after lines after line (after his name at the end) of what he is
a member of or an officer of is simply ridiculous... As I have said in the
past, if I listed every iris society I was affiliated with or a member of,
I'd have 18 lines after my name at the bottom of every post. Think how much
MORE wasted archive space that would take up if every single one of us did
that... No one even responded to Carolyn's pointing this out initially...

Is there no one that can put an end to this once and for all??? For me,
it's to the point of: If I read the iris-talk digest fine, and if I don't,
that's fine too... Some times getting so infuriated over occurrences such as
this make something that should be "fun" like iris-talk "should be"
completely and totally not worth it...

After I made my comments a few months ago about the nasty messages, I
received a message from Clarence Mahan trying to get to the bottom of this.
Since then, any time there is/has been a problem in this regard, I am/have
been forwarding the correspondence to him...

As usual, stating it the way I see it... Kathy Poore in OKC...

 Subject: OT: Using Subject Tags

(Scott, Just in case you missed it, John had already apologized for this
note accidently going to the list.)

Secondly, IMNSHO, I beleive it is necessary. I have sent my begging,
pleadeding and attempts to explain why it is so important to try to get
everyone to
try use the subject line tags, to no avail. Before the misposted note
below, less
than 10% of the postings had a subject tag. Now, it magically seems that
most have
 them!

Since everyone gets this information in the welcome to the list message,
it seems that it still bears frequent repeating on the list (at the very
least). I really don't think people on this list realize how inconsiderate
they
are being when they don't use these tags, most especially because this list
is pretty high-volume with a low STN ratio. And since they are such nice
folks
about everything else, I can't imagine what else would work.

Perhaps, a once in a great while more severe tone wouldn't do as much
harm as you think and perhaps a bit of good; insofar as the alternative is
far more
 drastic...
