Re: Re: iris pineappleing

Francelle,

I think that most if not all pineappleing is weather related. We have
years when we rarely see it occur. However, we have had a very mild
winter and some early warm (60's) temperature and I am finding some of
those conditions in the garden. This is occurring on iris which we have
not seen with it before. Also, due to the early warmth, we have seen
very rapid growth of the foliage. Perhaps this early rapid growth
results in some varieties having the pineapple effect. Fortunately,
there are unaffected rhizomes of the same variety in the same planting
that will be producing bloom and are not affected by the condition.

If pineappleing were a virus, I would think it would affect more and
more of the iris. Since that is not the case, I conclude it must be a
weather related situation.

Please do not be discouraged. Iris have few problems. Friends who grow
beautiful bearded iris in the valley tend to plant them where they have
dappled shade, or limited direct sunshine. You are very fortunate to be
able to grow those lovely Onco's and Aril's in your area.
