Good Morning Talkers,
Well, the weather has suddenly changed for us here in South Central Kentucky.
Once more, we are going straight from winter to summer. Last week warmed up
big time, and we are anticipating temperatures near 90 in the coming week.
It doesn't bode well for the advancement of bloom stalks. If it doesn't slow
down, we can look for weak and, possibly snaky, stalks. And, we may see
another season with everything blooming at once.
I am seeing some unusual things this spring. BRIDGE IN TIME has the most
advanced stalk in the garden. This has never happened before. Can it be
that it started to bloom last fall, but didn't advance to the point of winter
kill?
Also, I moved my seedlings to a sunny spot yesterday. The soil was still
cool to cold to the touch. This morning I gave them an early sprinking and
found that one cross has started sprouting. It is a Silverado cross--one I
would expect to be among the latest to sprout, due to the bloom season of the
parents. This concerns me. As an afterthought, this cross was at the end of
the group and got more light than the rest.
Why am I concerned? Several of the pots contain plicata seed, and I expected
these to sprout first, as is the normal sequence of events. Will I still get
sprouts in these pots, or did I miss the window of opportunity for this year
by leaving them in the shade to long? The shade reduced the temperature of
the soil and the amount of light exposure. I know I'll have answers in a
week or two, but speculation is fun. Don't you think?
JEWEL BABY opened its first bloom yesterday, and there are a large number of
stalks in most of my established dwarfs. Early TBs are showing stalks and I
suspect many more will start emerging in this heat wave.
Isn't it fun?
