Wow - like at Walter's garden in Mississippi, the irises here seem to
have really appreciated not having our usual 'summer during the middle
of winter' weather this year. In spite of the drop to 25, then to 19 a
few weeks ago, stalks are coming up everywhere. The steady cold
(occasional light frosts each week) before that seems to have kept them
prepared. SDBs are blooming in the foliage but at least they have
blooms - BLUE POOLS, BEING BUSY, BABY BLESSED, WIDOW'S VEIL, NEGRA
MODELO, RARE EDITION, PIPPI LONGSTOCKING, CIMMARON ROSE. I can't
remember for sure - some of these may be IBs, but all are the same
height. The seedling I. reichenbachii clump is just loaded with bloom,
above the foliage this year.
Stalks look normal on the few TBs showing so far - nice & fat and
normally elongated to the first bract so far (very odd for here!) & lots
of stalks per clump ('lots' means more than one).
Some of these were covered with Reemay for the two nights when temps
dropped to 19, but some were exposed both nights. I think keeping the
rhizomes buried under a bit of dirt helps. Except for the rot prone.
Even a stalk or two already showing on a couple of my older seedlings
(2nd yr bloom) that were not under Reemay.
Now if I can just get all the 'companion plants' pulled before they bury
the bloomstalks.

There may even be pears, cherries, and peaches this year!
