I have been guilty of breaking open a bale of lucerne hay (alfalfa to you) 
for the kangaroos, when feed gets scarce in early autumn, before the break. 
I also sometimes leave the weeds in the garden for them to eat.
They don't devastate the garden like deer though, and they are such lovely 
gentle animals, if you don't try to handle them. A large mamma, with a 
little head and paws hanging out of her pouch still delights us, even though 
they are common round here.
