Vince: The plant (an Irid) you are referring to is "Hemerodactylus tuberosa"
aka "Snake's Head Iris" aka "Widow's Iris". Can't really provide any cultural
info since I just planted them and basically forgot about them. I have not
fertilized them or cared for them other than to keep most of the weeds away
(in which I have not been very successful). Perhaps a light feeding with
standard "bulb food" might help.
I have been growing mine for about 6 years (from a start received from
Bennett Jones). It took 2 years to settle in but has bloomed every year
since. At present I have 4 seed pods developing and if the slugs don't get
them ----?!?!?!
