CULT: a borer with no place to go?

Hello All,
I'm a bit stumped, and I wonder if any of you would care to hazard a
guess, a theory, or perhaps even share actual knowledge (if there is any
actual knowledge of this subject to be had). I have mentioned in earlier
posts how the local deer are currently keeping my iris leaves trimmed
right down to the rzs. This week (today, in fact) we are experiencing
our first two-consecutive 70+ degree days of the year. If published
reports are accurate, this means our local iris borer eggs should be
hatching today. I have been working to remove all old iris foliage and
dead plant debris from the iris beds, but I doubt I've been successful in
removing every single borer egg. And so, my question is this:
If a borer larva hatches and can locate no iris leaves on which to climb
and enter a fan, will it:
A. starve to death
B. go directly for the rhiz and start feeding on that
C. some other option that I haven't yet considered
What do you all think/theorize/know about this? Any and all insights
appreciated.
