I was asked offlist what I was crossing my profusely blooming I.
reichenbachii with & am curious as to what others might think would make
interesting crosses with it. I haven't made any crosses so far, mostly
because there is nothing much blooming. I avoid early blooming irises
(early TBs and most medians) because they always get fried by hard
freezes at inopportune moments - lots of shriveled stalks and browned
buds.
JESSE'S SONG manages to bloom pretty well most years and has just
opened. Now that would be a wild and wierd cross, so maybe I will try
it. Only a half dozen pallida stalks have elongated, and most have
blasted flowers, so that's probably out. ENGLISH COTTAGE (which I
covered for some of the worst late freezes) is going to be open soon &
looks fairly healthy.
But there will be a lot to choose from among later TBs, so I've saved
some reichenbachii pollen.
Any wild ideas/suggestions?
