Re: Re: TB: Purple-based foliage

Howdy All,

I know this isn't TB based.... but some of the other species or cultivars
of species show purple to the foliage when young.

The cultivar "Gerald Darby" (I think I. virginica based?) has the most
wonderful royal purple new shoots, which then turn green as they age. The
great thing with this is that the flower stems are almost black-purple and
remain that way, so the purple tinge stays on the plant for quite a while.

I mention this just as a support of the fact that some irises have new
growth based purple (or in Gerald Darby's case the whole new growth is
solid purple until it is over 6 inches high) which then fades to green.

I have the Gerald Darby planted behind a clump of Iris pseudacorus
variegata.... this has variegated leaves, but only when young which then
change to green as they mature. The effect when both first break dormancy
is of a mass of new shoots, the front clump striped in green and white,
with the back clump a dark purple. Rather stunning.

Cheers.
