Containers

I have very heavy clay soil and plan to plant my iris in containers. 
I have no previous experience with iris and wonder whether containers 
are suitable for them. If so, about how many could I plant to a tub 
that's about 18 inches across?  What would I use for the planting 
medium? Any help would be appreciated.
