Sharon,
German Irises and Barbudo Irises are obsolete or uncommon synonyms for
Bearded Irises (as contrasted with beardless irises, such as Japanese,
Siberian, Louisiana, spuria, etc.). The term German Irises originated from
the fact that hundreds of years ago the most common bearded iris in
cultivation was Iris germanica; Barbudo is just Latin for "bearded".
The American Iris Society recognizes several classes of bearded irises
based on differences in size of blooms, height of stalks, and season of
bloom as follows: Miniature Dwarf Bearded, Standard Dwarf Bearded,
Intermediate Bearded, Miniature Tall Bearded, Border Bearded, and Tall
Bearded.
You could go to www.irisregister.com and sign on to obtain access to the
online version of the American Iris Society's Checklists of Registrations
and Introductions. This is a work in progress, and all of the descriptive
information in the printed Checklists has not yet been incorporated into
the online database, but it is the only site I am aware of where you could
type in the name of an iris and get the kind of information you are looking
for.
