Subject: [iris-talk] ot-bio carol
I have only been growing iris for a couple of years-just love them! I
do have a question however that I have been trying to find in my
flower books, but can't get a satisfactory answer. I get new rhizomes
every year and try to pick ones that have some green on them.
*My guess is that you are buying them from Walmart, Home Depot or K-mart type stores. They usualy don't stock them untill it is too late to safely plant. Sometimes they keep them over the winter and try to sell them in the spring. They are not very good places to buy iris. If so don't feel bad about it most of us have done the samething*
I get
them planted and some of them get really soft and of course never
produce. How do you know a good one from a bad one? If it becomes
really soft, does that mean it's dead?
* When they are soft they are rotting, The main fan will rot and you might just have the small increases showing green. These will take 2 to 3 years to bloom. Rhizomes should be very firm all most hard. If it is soft it is dead or dying.*
Also, how long does it usually take for the iris to bloom once
planted? I have some that are about 3 years old and still nothing.
I know these seem like silly questions, but like I said, I can't find
any answers. I've asked around and come up with shrugs-please
help!
* Adding this with the other good advice others have posted*
