STARRING is new in my garden this spring and has a bloomstalk coming.
Walter's comments have whetted my appetite.
I might say that I ordered 15-20 iris from Kieth Keppel last summer and this
spring, all but one (COLOR MY WORLD) seem set to bloom on very good stalks.
Even COLOR MY WORLD has a kind of swollen fan in the center, but I am not
sure that the stalk will make it. I also had doubts about MIDNIGHT OIL but
this morning saw a stalk emerging. In all my years of irising I have never
had such good success with new plants. Increase also looks strong. Thanks,
Plicata-Man!
In the more established beds, which sadly now are getting a bit too much
shade from trees planted years ago, bloom is less certain. A couple of good
stalks on HELLO DARKNESS (must try crossing this with MIDNIGHT OIL) and, as
usual, on LUXOR GOLD, a very under-rated Schreiner product. MESMERIZER is
producing several somewhat weak stalks--the weak stalks were passed on to
some of my IB seedlings from this variety. Nonperformers this year and for
the past few years include STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, GOOD VIBRATIONS, WORLD CLASS,
SKYWALKER, and GOODBYE HEART. It's goodbye plants to all of these after
this year to make room for some other varieties.
Looks like pretty good Louisiana and Spuria bloom coming up. I fear there
will be little to show on the Siberians and Japanese--they seem to suffer
most from our drought conditions of the past several years.
Iris douglasiana (sold to me as "Iris lazica") has some good stalks and is
my first success with PCNs. Nice lilac-blue color.
I'm hoping for cool weather, 'cause I'm off to sunny southern California for
a week starting tomorrow. I suspect much of the season there (San Fernando
Valley and Fresno region) will be past, but will head up to Catheys Valley
and Superstition Gardens to catch their peak bloom.
