I wasn't sure what tags to use, since I'm gonna say a little bit
about everything <G>
Regarding I. odaesanensis, I'm a little disappointed. A lot of buds
formed and were promptly devoured by slugs. I have one single bud
which has survived and will be blooming concurrently with I. cristata
alba and I. cristata light blue. I intend to cross pollinate both
ways with each cristata.
Regarding I. cretensis (aka: I. unguicularis sub. cretensis) I have
my first seed pod, after 4-1/2 years of growing this species. It's a
bee pod, but still I'm thrilled to know this little trooper can grow
& bloom & set seed in my very un-Crete-like climate. All my
divisions planted outside have survived the winter. What a tough
little flower!
Regarding my first bearded seedlings, what can I say but YAWN! A
generic yellow self, and a generic purple self (with bluish beards).
Nothing to write home about! Sadly I can't detect bloom stalks in
any of my other hundreds of seedlings. This is very frustrating
since this is their 3rd season. I really messed them up when I moved
to the new house. I guess I should be glad they survived at all.
Regarding all my acquisitions from last year... almost entirely
arilbreds & spurias... I didn't lose a single one this winter! The
saddest survivor is I. koreana which started off as a small clump of
about 5 or 6 fans and has dwindled down to just 1.
Happily/surprisingly, I. giganticaerula has survived it's 2nd winter
in Ohio. I'm hoping this year it finally blooms. This is amazing to
me because I think it's a Zone 8 or 9 plant, and I'm on the Zone 5/6
border. It even stayed green. I may have cheated a little bit
though, because I have it growing on the south side of my house...
about 3 ft. from the house.
I've discovered that the native violets (I have 3 kinds in my yard)
and the cristatas make great companion plants because they bloom at
the same time and grow about the same height. If only I could keep
my cats from tromping on them.
Okay, I'm done babbling.
