Hi Robert, I was hoping someone with first hand information about your two pests might respond, but seeing no responses, I'll try to help. I am a retired entomologist but have not had to deal with either of these two pests. Please be aware not all products are available in all states, so always refer to the label and consider asking the local Cooperative Extension office in your county for help. There may also be a Master Gardner program in your area (you can contact them thru the Cooperative Extension Office also), and they can be very helpful. Two systemic insecticides come to mind that might help. One is imidacloprid, sold under trade names like Merit or Marathon or Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. It is very good for aphids and caterpillar pests (like Verbena Bud Moth) but not good on fly larvae (like iris bud fly). It is a fairly safe material, but somewhat expensive. The second is dimethoate (Trade Name Cygon). It is an organophosphate insecticide and should be used very carefully. It is more likely to be effective against iris bud fly. If you have questions which I might help with, please let me know. I will be battling the Verbena Bud Moth and Orthochaeta or "iris bud fly" in a few weeks. Last year I tried some granular product but it didn't seem to have any affect on the iris bud fly which was eating up the inside of the blooms at a record rate. I am mainly growing Louisiana Irises in lined beds and really worry about putting very much into the soil as it will not leach out and will have to break down. It seems that the chemicals available have changed and gotten so complicated that I can't pronounce or remember what the even are. I am thinking that something that I can spray the entire plant with would work better but don't have any idea which will work best. Any suggestions or experiences will help.
