re: planning shows

carolyn - we (east tennessee iris society) are planning our 3rd demonstration
show this spring. we haven't done a judged show yet - we are all AIS members
(we pay our dues out of profits from the summer rhizome sale), but we just
are more interested in sharing the beauty and diversity of iris with the
public than competition at the moment. Some of our members hybridize, so we
have some seedlings. As you can tell, we are pretty low key about it all -
we wanted to have our show in one of the local malls but they wanted to
charge an arm and a leg, so we have it in one of the University of Tennessee
'auditoriums' - its actually just a big open hall the size of a pretty big
high school cafeteria dining area. we have a big turn out (around 1500 last
year) because our chair does an excellent job of getting the word out to the
public in newspapers, radio, etc.

we also sell plants - very dangerous - like being in one of those cartoons
about department store sales. lots of stampeding people as soon as the door
opens and lost of anger over their not being enough plants or the right
varieties to suit everyone.
