Some Basic Questions

I have been conversing with Carolyn Schaffner on various iris topics via
personal e-mail and she suggested that I post some of my questions to the
list to get the opinion of other experts. The following questions may seem
like FAQ to you pros, but maybe a few other novices like myself have the
same questions, but are too shy to ask. Remember these are my first
questions for the list, so go easy on me and Yes, I plan to join the AIS.

1. Does an iris hybrid have to be registered with AIS to compete or win in a
show?
2. Does one have to know the name of an iris for it to compete in a show?
3. Say I wanted to try my hand at breeding iris, would I have to keep
detailed pedigrees on the plants and parents in order to register the new
hybrids? (I know this is presumptuous to think a novice could breed a Dykes
Medal winner.)
4. Is there any information on the Web about getting started in shows or
tips on beginner iris breeding?
5. Since I'm not an AIS member yet, can anyone give me some contact names
or information for active local AIS chapters in South Carolina or Georgia?

Comment on "Pseudacorus Controversy": I can understand why individuals who
are eagerly awaiting spring and suffering from cabin fever would have active
debates over Latin pronunciation. It all seemed like a dignified debate to
me, nowhere near an actual flame. It actually increased my interest in
reading the list digest over the last few days. I'm sure all of this lively
debate will disappear this spring and summer once everyone is ooing and
ahhing over their flowers. Then I guess the complaint will be about all of
the bragging! :-)
