I would like to second Jim Wilson's praise for Iris graminea. It thrives in
northern Virginia WHEN GROWN IN THE SHADE (but not in full sun). I have it
growing in quite deep shade. It is easy to miss the flowers which bloom down
in the foliage...but when you smell the delightful aroma of ripe
plums....there is nothing like it! An altogether delightful iris! Clarence
Mahan in nothern Virginia (who boasted an hour ago that it was not
snowing....but now it is! )
