In a recent e-mail Steve Marak commented about pseudachoris:
>Kohlein's book lists a number of other forms - v. bastardii, v. superba,
'>Typ Keukenhof', 'Beuron', 'Ilgengold', and 'Fahle Ilge', the last 3 being
>tetraploids. I'm sure there are more since that book was published. In the
>opinion of the list, which are the very best varieties or cultivars of this
>species and why?
I'm growing several varieties of I. pseudachorus in Portsmouth, VA - including
Beuron, bastardii, Doneau, Roy Davidson, Phil Edenger, Holden Clough and a
couple of varieties that I can't rember the names of now since I'm not at home.
To be honest I haven't really noted and cultural differences since all of the
ones I'm growing have appeared to suffered equally thru one of our coldest and
harshest winters. I'm generalizing now, but I don't think that I. pseudacorus
has been hybridized that far away from the initial species to notice any
differences. The one exception might be the interspecies crosses. The cross
with I. ensata is coloric and many people report boosting iron supplement to
help it along. This is really a species that is in its infancy stage as to
hybridizers working with it.
