Oxalic acid plays no role in the relief of teething pain, in fact it might
even cause more problems. The crystals of oxalic acid are needle-like and
very sharp and can cause severe stomach distress. The pain relief comes from
the pressure exerted on the gums which to some extent relieves the pain.
Using a cold spoon will do the same job. Our pediatrician, back these many
moons ago, suggested a 50-50 mixture of honey and Southern Comfort.
Rationale(???) There are three things rapidly absorbed by the human body -
Sugar, alcohol and milk. The dosage was to rub the mixture on the infants
inflamed gums to relieve local pain and if pain was real severe to give 2
drops for every month of age. Modern parents are averse to the use of
alcohol on teething infants, but the total amount ingested is insignificant.
When the pain gets REALLY bad the parent is advised to drink half the
bottle for himself.
No charge for the consultation.
