Yeah, Bill. Orphans (or orphens, in the trade) IS a boring name. I didn't
think it up.
Putting in beds for the city or public areas requires lots and lots
of manpower -- woman power as the case might be. WNYIS put in a display
bed at the Botanical Gardens. There are some members who donated the
latesta and best (that were nolonger desired at home) in the beds, after
preparing the beds, etc. The area was mapped, cultivars labeled, etc. etc.
and weeding days were set up and all's well with the world until one summer
the generous city had assigned some youth with CETA funds to the Botans
and the labels were scattered!!! What a mess. Fortunately, some members
who knew approximately what went into the garden could identify the blooms
and we could dig and sell the rhizomes, mostly labeled.
As I view the spot , it seems to be low lying and damp so its
location might have contributed to the problem.
Public Gardens would be a fantastic way to get children involved
in gardening. We haven't tried since ...
The point is -- someone has to tend the gardens.
Carolyn Schaffner PS a tiny datura blossom is out under lights!!
