Kathy, what DOOMS your dahlias? I'm growing my first this season (the
sought-after 'Bishop of Llandaff' that I've been seeking after for three
years*), and would like to avoid heartbreak.
Re borer: If I don't see any of the telltale pinholes in the leaves, should I
be feeling my way down them anyway to scout for borers? How could I tell the
difference between the enemy and a swelling bloom stalk? Or will I just know?
The TB foliage is about a foot tall and rising fast.

*My source for 'B of L' is Heronswood Nursery, 7530 NE 288th St., Kinsgston, WA
98346, fax (360) 297-8321. They're sold out so don't call them for it but you
may want to send for their $4 mini-book catalog for reading next winter; it's
pictureless but is filled with good writing and tons of plants that you've not
heard of before.
I believe the Bishop is a U.K. introduction; one of the big National Trust
gardens is near Llandaf, Wales, and I think it was developed there.
