Juri asked:
<< Rodionenko show me a catalog of Regel's nursery in St.Petersburg, year
1912. It list 116 variety of Iris germanica. Four ones marked as
"interregna", they are HELGE, HALFDAN, INGEBORG and WALHALLA.
Could someone tell what does this term mean? >>
Juri, I have forwarded your note to Clarence in case he has some insights,
but I will tell you what the word means generally. It is essentially a term of
political origin, but may refer to any form of authority or continuity.
An interregnum--the plural is either interrenums or interregna--is a period
between two regimes of the same form or of different forms of government, or a
period during which in which the normal functions of government or control are
suspended. For instance: the period between the death of one sovereign and the
accession of the heir. It may also refer to a period of freedom from customary
authority, or a pause in a continuous series. ( per. Websters Third New
International Dictionary)
The bearded irises Juri refers to are all from G&K in 1908. All Intermediates.
Which could be significant I would think.
