Rick--"black stems" suggests Iris xrobusta, the hybrid between versicolor
and virginica. The primary member of this clan, 'Gerald Darby,' is fully
fertile, at least with virginica, and the offspring usually have the purple
to black bloomstalks. The bloom color can vary quite a lot depending on
the virignica parent. I have a nice series of seedlings from 'Gerald
Darby' x I. virginica alba that are pale, pale blue with darker veins. All
have the purple-based foliage and purple stems.
