Not all iris rots smell. If damaged rhizomes are rotted by ordinary soil
bacteria, no smell results. The horrible odor is the result of infection
by Erwinia carotovora.
I used to give my microbiology students a thrill (?) by letting them
inoculate slices of potato with this little gem. The next day the lab
smelled like....
