John's suggestion that "Unless the termite people are going to cut
right through the clump, I'd be tempted to just leave it in place." One
is taking a great risk when dealing with the worker. I asked one to
move 32 cement pads from one side of the house to the other - a simple
task. I said that he could use a clear path through the garden so that
he would not step on the plants. At about pad 30, I discovered that he
was using a very careful trail with each foot step placed in the same
spot for each trip. Unfortunately, the second but last spot was a clump
of "grass" which was actually my only surviving I. ruthenica! It was in
its fourth year after being started from seed, was the last survivor of
10, and had not flowered. This year, the plant is still alive, looks
healthy, and might actually flower despite the "help" of the worker.
I would move everything right out of the way.
Ian, in Ottawa where we are having a period of beautiful spring weather.
