Several states have Natural Heritage Programs within their Departments of
Conservation and Natural Resources or equivalent agencies and concerned
persons may find this a profitable avenue of research. We tend to overlook the
fact that that irisarians are not the only ones concerned about the status of
native iris populations---and species-- and that botanists and
conservationists may be at work on the problem while AIS and SIGNA remain
quiet---or are circumscribed in their activity by virtue of being voluntary
organizations with ageing memberships and limited and diminishing financial
resources.

The first and the most complex issue (involving as it must the ownership of
land and the sovereignty of nations) which must be addressed in the
preservation of species is the preservation of habitat. Think globally, act
locally.
