This result may have had a lot to do with timing. Late in the year, the sap
pressure in plants is downward and so a systemic will be translocated relatively
quickly to the rhizome and roots. Had the spraying been done in the spring when
the sap pressure is upward, the damage probably would have been less.

Several years ago, we had what seemed like an emergency situation in the spring
when a great many Canada Thistle showed up in several places in the iris field. I
realized that it was not the ideal time for killing thistle but I saw little
alternative and sprayed 2% Roundup solution over the top.(Roundup is generally
used at 1% except for things like thistle). It got almost all of the thistle but
it was slow. The iris fared a bit better than the thistles. They were definitely
given a jolt and for a month or two I thought that most of the MDB and SDBs were
killed. Eventually nearly all recovered and by September were doing fine.
When blossoms did appear, they were certainly strange. Mostly small thick petals,
and, you guessed it, - white.

Had I used that concentration in September, I would expect that all of the iris
would have been gonzo.

Desperate situations require desperate measures!
