No place could be more humid than MS in the summertime. You see
our people depicted in the movies sitting on our verandas, sipping mint
juleps, and fanning ourselves with funeral home fans trying to survive in
the heat and humidity.
Seriously, our arilbred irises don't seem to be all that concerned
with the humidity if they are planted on the south side of the house under
a long roof overhang. The ones that do best are the Les Peterson
arilbreds, and a newer one (for me, that is) from Ben Hager called
ZERZURA. These are all half breds. Quarter talls can fend for themselves
almost anywhere in the garden, but not the quarter medians. I seem to
think they need a little more water and tlc and should be grown in a
protected place. WI winters would make the little ones shiver, I think.
The Kary Garden in Scottsdale, AZ, lists all of the Peterson
irises, as Ardi Kary is a daughter or granddaughter of Les. She usually
has an ad in the classified section of the AIS Bulletin.
BOLD SENTRY by Les Peterson makes an excellent parent.
